The other day a woman introduced me to her baby, called Jane. It seems I’m so used to children having silly names I honestly thought I’d misheard. What, not Daisy-Jane, or Juniper Jane, or Jane-Banana?
‘Ja…?’ I repeated, to check I’d got it right.
‘Just Jane,’ said the mother.
No doubt she’ll be the only Jane in her class, standing out in a sea of Arlos, Tallulahs and Dashiells. It’s funny, you get all these parents trying so hard to be different, when clearly the way to do it is to christen your child Paul or Claire.
